Nam Khem Institute
|
| |
With Mission Three Youth Imperative hopes to recruit and train teachers for an educational institute which will provide English language instruction for all ages in Baan Nam Khem Village.
The Nam Khem Institute's education services will help Nam Kaem residents recover, improve, and succeed. Nam Khem Village's English education now is lacking. And, before the tsunami it was also lacking in many respects. Students, for instance, have received education in English. They can say "hello, my name is ____. Nice to
meet you." However, they cannot identify individual words. They generally cannot sound out words in
English. And, they cannot communicate effectively in
English. However, Nam Khem students are extremely bright and able to learn. And they want to learn. A best-practices English education program, free for all Nam Khem residents, may be one of the most important keys in returning Nam Khem to normalcy and structure. Those who can speak and understand English get better jobs, better contracts, better higher education, and often a better life. The Nam Khem Institute will be housed in a large new building just a few hundred yards from the Nam Khem School.
The Nam Khem Institute may also serve as a model for other communities. In its first year the Institute would likely serve 500 people. In subsequent years the Institute would likely serve 500 plus villagers per year.
In order to create Nam Khem Institute, Youth Imperative is collaborating with local and international organizations.
The Nam Khem Institute may be the single best way that Youth Imperative can help tsunami victims.
